So Canada's second anthem has been bought and sold this week at the horror of many Canadians! Some say that Saturday night will never be the same again. For 40 years we have heard Dolores Claman's iconic song, known as "The Hockey Theme" at the beginning of HNIC, but that time has come to an end. This week the songs rights were sold to CTV for a reported $3 million dollars. CTV plans to use the song for their Wednesday night show as well as the Olympics.
I understand where all the parties were coming from on this issue, I just wish we could lose the spin. First of all, CTV did not "save" this song from oblivion like they have been saying. I am pretty confident that the song would not be forgotten, and was not going anywhere that Dolores Claman didnt want it to go.
Second, Dolores Claman had the ability to sell the song to whom ever she wished to, and she did. It is her song and she had the right to do with it as she wished. So, please stop trying to convince everyone that the song was going to slip into oblivion, as you have been saying. If it did, it would have been because you wanted it too.
Third, the CBC could not afford the price tag for the song. Since have the funds come from tax dollars, it would be a very tough arguement to justify the price. On the other hand, some say that CBC just ruined the only good show that they have. There are some strong feelings from across Canada on this issue.
My opinion, i think that all parties involved in this process are a bunch of greddy, lying pig fuckers. The CBC screwed Dolores out of money from ring tone sales and downloads, to which she became very pissed off and bitter. Dolores then sells the song to CTV, the highest bidder and rival hockey station, but clames that its because she wants to save the song......right. CTV jumps on the "saving" bandwagon, the whole time promoting their new hockey line up and schedule. The whole time loving the fact that they were able to put the screws to the CBC. Everyone involved in this mess are to blame for the anger of many Canadians. Am i pissed that the song will not be on Saturday night hockey on CBC anymore, your damn right i am. Is it going to make that big a difference to the show, i really doubt it. I think the thing i am pissed off with the most, is the fact that all parties are lying through their teeth about what they did and how they did it.
Its all about money, Dolores wanted cash and CTV could pay more than CBC, end of story. All the rest is a smoke screen of public relations horse shit.
